November 2024 – Chop Gate

Date: Sunday 24th November, 2024
Time: 1115am
Start: The Buck Inn, Chop Gate
Lunch: The Buck Inn, Chop Gate
Length: 4 Miles or so

We will start at 1115, and the walk with a coffee/tea stop, should take a little over two hours. We will aim to be back for lunch by 1400.

This is a pleasant stroll starting from the Buck Inn, Chop Gate, in a clockwise direction. We have been given permission to use the car park at the pub. The distance is approximately 7km [say 4 miles, or so] on tracks and footpaths. There are two climbs, neither too long and marked in red on the attached map. There are several stiles, and the walk takes us through five farms with beautiful views of Bilsdale. There is only one ford.

Lunch at the Buck Inn is a traditional Sunday dinner, with roast pork, roast beef, venison or a vegetarian option. Cost for the lunch is £14.95p, desserts and coffee are extra. Could you let us know if [and what] you will be eating, so we can inform them of exact numbers. Please let Rhona know before Monday 18th November.

The Buck Inn was at the end of the smugglers road from Saltburn organised originally by John Andrews in the 18th century. The route went via Danby Dale, Rosedale, Farndale, Bransdale Moor through William Beck Farm [on our walk] and on to Michael Johnson at The Buck Inn.
