November 2023 – Hawnby loop

Date: Sunday 26th November 2023
Start: 11.00am
Meet: Hawnby
Lunch Venue: Rose and Crown in Norton Beadlam

This is a pleasant loop on farm tracks and a tiny bit of road. A bit of a muddy footpath from just after the cattle grid on the moors and up to High Banniscue.

If it’s not raining and misty, the views are great! No reason why dogs can’t come, but likely they’ll need to be kept on leads as there are sheep and cattle in some of the fields/moors.

Parking is in the car parking area marked with a red spot on the map [it’s just round the bend on the way through the village to Osmotherley]. There is also parking in the car park of the pub, although the pub is sadly closed at the moment

Lunch is at the Rose and Crown in Norton Beadlam. This is a traditional carvery at £11.95 per head, with pub style puddings at £4.95 (order on the day). If you don’t fancy the carvery, or have special gastronomic needs, let us know as the pub is able to offer some alternatives. Could we please have numbers and any requests to rhona.sutherland@btinternet.com. Deadline is Monday, 20th November.

This is a delightful, circular stroll, in and around the valley of the Upper Rye. Offering gently undulating terrain and no fence-climbing, stream-jumping or
river-wading. Bridges have been provided where appropriate. There are three stiles and a short section off-piste but easy.
Take the Osmotherley road through Hawnby village to the large grass area at Hazel Heads [SE 529928].

This is about 3km or 2 miles from Hawnby. Total drive time is approximately 30mins from Oswaldkirk.

There are plenty of shorter walks around both Hazel Heads and Hawnby for those that wish to have lunch, but not do the full walk. See Walk map and map of Hawnby environs.
