Christmas 2022 – Helmsley and Duncombe Park

Date:  Sunday 18th December 2022
Start: 1100 (1130 for easier walk)
Meet: Christmas tree in Helmsley market place.
Lunch Venue: The Feathers
Time: 1345

Our Christmas walk has traditionally been a focus for a social event rather than a “yomp” in the countryside with the meal somewhere local to encourage non-walkers to join us.  So, with that in mind we are planning to use Helmsley / Duncombe Park and the Feathers Hotel as the base for our outing.  The plan is for the longer walk to start in Helmsley by the Christmas Tree at 1100 and for an easier walk to kick off at 1130 from the same start point.

Both walks will incorporate well-trodden routes which will allow folk to drop out or short cut if they wish although the longer walk does include a tougher section.  Hopefully we will be met at some point for some festive refreshments!

The menu on offer is attached.  Note the prices quoted are; for one course £18, two courses £23 or three courses £28 and include tea/coffee.  Please advise if you are either walking, dining or both with menu choices by Wednesday 14th.  Would all diners please ensure that they are in the Feathers by 1345.

November 2022 – Cowhouse Bank loop

Date:  Sunday 27th November 2022
Start: 11.00am
Meet: Cowhouse Bank car park
Length of walk: 5.5 miles
Lunch Venue: The Plough in Wombleton
Time: 2.30pm

This is a circular walk of just over 9km [5.5miles], with a total ascent/descent of 215m. We will meet at the carpark at the top of Cowhouse Bank at 1100. Travel up the Bransdale Road [opposite the BATA Garage in Helmsley] to the top of the bank and the carpark is
on the left.

The walk goes around the Loop in an anticlockwise direction [blue path below]. It starts down the Bank on the road, and after the ford [which is dry] follows a good track through woods/felled trees up on to the edge of the Moor. The path then works its way along until it turns south easterly back into the woods and up Helmsley Bank. From the top of the Bank it follows a good, downhill track along the top and back to the car park.

For those wanting a less strenuous option there is a pleasant stroll to the north-west along the top [and back], as far as you wish to go [dotted path below]; there are great views of the moors and Bransdale. This will not be led, but we would suggest starting at 1300 if you would like a stroll before lunch which is at 1430 in the Plough at Wombleton. The main walk comes back along this route.

Lunch at the Plough in Wombleton is booked for 1430. Please get your lunch requests to Rhona [Rhona.sutherland@btinternet.com] by Friday 18th November. Non-walkers are, of course, welcome.

December 2021 – Gilling Woods

Date: Sunday 19th December 2021
Start: 11.00am
Meet: Opposite Autism Plus centre (see below)
Length of walk: Just over 3 miles
Lunch Venue: The Worsley Arms, Hovingham
Time: 2.00pm

A pleasant walk of just over 3 miles with no stiles, 2 gates and no livestock. To get to the start drive to Gilling and turn right at the Fairfax Arms past the Village Hall and Miniature Railway. In just under a mile you will see cautionary signs about a speed hump (which is a very severe example, so please take care!). Very shortly afterwards you will see our parking area on the left opposite the base of Autism Plus and its chocolate shop.

Most of your effort will be expended in the first steady climb of about 50 metres. Then you can relax and enjoy the rest of the walk. We will have a pause at the viewpoint for a sip of water if you bring some. Then after the second mile we will stop, as usual in December, for something a little stronger. Finally an easy walk back to the start.

There will also be an easy level walk of under 2 miles – This will start from the same place at 12 noon.

We should complete the round by 1.15pm and lunch is booked for 2pm at The Worsley Arms.

Please send your menu choices (below) to Lot Doucet: cjdoucet@btinternet.com 01439 788198 by Sunday 12 December.

You are welcome to join us for the meal even if you don’t walk. You are also welcome to walk and not eat – but please let us know that we should be expecting you to join in the walk.
